This thread is about what I just said so that you can share, and play other player’s maps that you would not get anywhere else. There are many ways to do this, but I’ll be talking about the three most popular ways in which two of these can work on the console version.
For any of the console formats of a map, you will currently need a program called Horizon, the only free Xbox 360 modding platform. It is currently the only program that can extract and replace files found on a configured USB device. I have connections with a developer who is currently making a program where Horizon will NOT be required but it is still not released yet. Without further ado, here are the 3 ways to download, install and play custom mc maps.
1. Normal PC format
Materials-->Computer with MC installed
Procedure-->
I. Download the map off the SGN or any popular platform where the map is featured. Most likely the file will be a zip file.
II. Extract the file to a place you know you can certainly find it.
III. Launch the Minecraft alternate launcher. Click on ‘Edit Profile’ and then ‘Open Game Dir’ in the dialog box that pops up.
IV. Click on the file ‘saves’, copy the address of this file and then exit out of the file explorer and dialog box.
V. In the file explorer, go to the place that you extracted the map to and when you find the map, move it to the address you just copied.
VI. Start PC MC and the save should be included when you start the game.
2. Console bin file format. (Most popular for consoles)
Materials-->Configured USB for Xbox 360 files with at least 4GB of memory, Horizon
Procedure-->
I. You will need Horizon installed for this to work. A USB must also be configured properly for Xbox 360 files.
II. On your 360, click on ‘Storage’ and then Hard Drive, then move your gamer profile onto the memory stick. You will also have to move at least one map from your Minecraft onto the memory stick for the process to work.
III. Move your memory stick onto your computer and start up Horizon.
IV. Download the bin file of the map, you should not need to extract such a file but if need be extract to a location you know you can find it.
V. In Horizon, double click on ‘Games’ and then ‘Minecraft’. Then in file explorer, drag and drop the map onto this same screen in Horizon. It will ask you for which profile to assign the map to, so click on your gamertag.
VI. Now you can move your memory stick back onto the 360 and the map should work fine. You can optionally move the profile and maps back onto your 360 hard drive.
VII. If you want to play the map on your XB1, upload the save on 360 and retrieve the map on your XB1.
3. Console savegame.dat file format.
Materials-->Configured USB for Xbox 360 files with at least 4GB of memory, Horizon
Procedure-->
I. You will need Horizon installed for this to work. A USB must also be configured properly for Xbox 360 files.
II. On your 360, click on ‘Storage’ and then Hard Drive, then move a newly generated MC world onto the memory stick. You will also have to move at least one map from your Minecraft onto the memory stick for the process to work.
III. Move your memory stick onto your computer and start up Horizon. Download the savegame.dat of the map, you should not need to extract such a file but if need be extract to a location you know you can find it.
IV. In Horizon, double click on ‘Games’ and then ‘Minecraft’. Drag your newly generated MC world into the middle screen of the program. A modding package screen will come up. Go to ‘Contents’ and you should see a list with one item in it, the old savegame.dat file. Right click on this file and press ‘Replace’. From here go find the new savegame.dat file of the custom map and press ‘Open’ in the file explorer. Horizon will replace the file for you. Then click ‘Save, Rehash and Resign’ at least 3 times.
V. Move the memory stick back onto your 360 and the map should work just fine. You can optionally move the profile and maps back onto your 360 hard drive.
VI. If you want to play the map on your XB1, upload the save on 360 and retrieve the map on your XB1.
If you have any questions on any of the three methods above, don't forget to PM to DXOS3 or reply to this thread, and he will have an answer for you within a couple days.
